Use Video to Promote Your Sermons

Hey pastor! It's Richard Chancy with 24toDouble, and I'm going to show you something really cool today. I'm going to show you how to set up a webpage on your website where you can just slap a video on there every week and direct people to that page to tell them what's coming up in your church –whether that's a big event you're doing or the next sermon series. Whatever that is, and that will give you a link that you can share with your congregation that they can in turn share with their friends, and they can do that via text message, via social media, or whatever it is the medium they want to use, but what you're doing is giving them a really creative way to invite their friends.

Okay, so what I use for our website is a WordPress platform. Most of you are probably using WordPress whether you know it or not. WordPress is the most common CMS, which is just a way of saying it's the most common platform that websites are built on today. So most likely your website is built on WordPress. If its' not, then you have a different CMS, but the theology of what I'm going to teach you today is the same no matter what kind of platform you're using.

So, I'm going to go ahead and log into our 24toDouble site. This is the main page of 24toDouble, and there's a button up here on the right hand side if you're already logged in as an administrator, which I am. You'll have to figure out how to log in, or you'll have to talk to your web developer about how to log in, or just kind of walk them through this process. Share the video with them so that you can do this.

Create a Memorable Link

So, the first thing I'm going to do is I'm going to create a page with a memorable link that I can share with people. I'm going to click on Pages here and I'm going to click “Add New”. On the New Page this is what pops up, so in the top here I can put my title. The title is also going to be the URL unless we change it, and the URL is just the website link, so I'm just going to put “Messages”. You can come up with something a lot more creative than that. I'll tell you what, why don't we just put “Weekly” on here and that way you'll know that's your weekly website. I will tell you this, be real careful with how creative you get with the title, because when you ask people to share this you're going to have to tell them “” or “”. You'll want to make it a link that's easy to remember.

Adding a Video

The thing is, if we do this the right way, we can use this link week in and week out, and just change the video on there and point it to the next message or whatever, and I'll show you how to do that in a second. So you can see when I type this in it automatically goes ahead and sets me up with this, it's permalink, but this is the URL. I'm going to “save draft” on that. The next thing I need to do is I need to grab some video to stick in this page. It really is this simple. I'm going to go over to YouTube and go to my channel in the creator studio, which is where all of my video is. Now below this video, you'll actually see this when I copy and paste in there a second, I've put a couple other tutorials in there for you. One of them is how to set up a YouTube channel if you don't already have one.

What I do is I go down in here, and I find the video that I want. I don't click on edit because I don't want to edit it. I'm just going to click right on the image and then pause the video. And now you'll see if I scroll down a bit that I can share, so I'm going to click “share” on this. Now, here is the link for the video. In this case we don't need the link. We actually need the embed code which is right here. Sometimes you'll use a link if you're just linking to it, but in this case we need the embed code. Now this is what the embed code looks like. Right here it's an iframe code, and this is the height and width which is pretty important. You can change this manually over on WordPress if you want, but you need to keep the aspect ratio the same because you wouldn't want to go 640×640 because then it would be the same height as width. Unless you want to make yourself look a little thinner on screen which is nothing wrong with that. Nothing wrong with that at all.

You can change the aspect ratios here, just be careful that you don't make them too big because most of the people that view this will probably view it on a mobile device, and while it is mobile friendly, you just want to make sure that the image when they load it on a mobile device isn't way off to the right of the page. It just doesn't look good. Here's the embed code. I'm going to copy that, then I'm going to go back over here to my page and I'm going to paste it. Now, through the magic of editing, I've actually added a couple of other things in here. It's really important that when you go back over here that you realize there's a difference between the visual page and the text page. The text is actually the HTML page and that's where we're going to want to paste all of our copy. The visual is what you see once you've pasted it. So I paste in the code. Here's the iframe code. I'm going to show you this then I'm going to show you what these other two codes are here on a different screen.

So the iframe code is right here. If I go to “visual”, this is what it looks like. The video is not going to play in this admin mode, but I'll show you what it looks like in a second. This is what your video should look like when it populates. And then there's two other links down here that I'll get to in just a second. I'm going to “save draft” again. It's always important to be saving. You never know what's going to happen; internet outage or just a glitch in your computer, and then you lose your work. I'm going to click preview. I already got a preview page open here. This is what my page looks like now. Here's the video that I just pulled from YouTube, then there's two other links here. I want to show you what these are.

The first one is just a video I found on YouTube. Now, YouTube is critical. When you're doing any kind of work like this and you get stuck, the first place you should always go is to YouTube. Second place is Google to figure things out. And there will be things. I'm sure that I've missed something just in this short tutorial. There will be things that you need to know. There are a million videos on whatever it is that you need to know. It does not matter what, it is on YouTube. So make sure that your first stop is YouTube.

Creating a YouTube Channel

Here's How to Create a YouTube Channel. This is a twelve minute video. If you've never done this before, this is the fastest way to get up and running, posting videos to YouTube. You can do that from your computer. You can post to a YouTube channel right from your phone. So you can shoot a video from your phone, post it to YouTube, and you can even make some edits to it on the YouTube platform, and this video is going to show you how to do a lot of that.

Church Video Black Box

The other link down here is Church Video Black Box, which is a product that I created about six or seven months ago and, we had an incredible response to it. It's basically how you can script, shoot, edit and launch video in an hour. The reason I put this together is because we had so many questions inside of 24todouble over the years of how we're doing video and how we're doing webinars, how we're doing our video training, all those things, that I just decided to put together this resource for that. And the price will go up here shortly, but for now the price is a very reasonable $47. If you want to click over there and get started with that, as with anything else we do, if you get in there and decide, “Hey, there's nothing here for me”, just let us know and we'll refund your money and you can keep the training as well.

Okay, that's enough of that.

Preview Your Page

This is what your page looks like. Now the really cool thing about this, let me go back to the editor, is I'm going to go ahead and publish this now. If you want to go right to this page and check this out as you're watching this video go to, and you can see the end result. What I'm going to do when I get off the video is I'm going to go in and put this in a prettier page because we'll use this down the road.

Big idea here. Once you get this set up it will look something like this. Now the cool thing about this is, just imagine being able to stand on stage every week when you go the part where you talk about the next sermon series that's coming up, you can stand on stage and go, “Hey for more information about the upcoming sermon go to,” or “” whatever you name it. The URL, the website, the page that you are sending people to never changes. It's the same every week. Week in, week out, week in, week out. All you are going to do is when you shoot a new video that you want to promote, your next sermon series or your big event, or your big volunteer opportunity, that you can point people at that page for any given time, so people will begin to learn that when they want to invite their friends or they want to know more about what's coming up, they can always go to this same page, in and out, in and out.

Hopefully, you're picking up what I'm laying down on this. I think this could be a big idea for you, to be able to use video like this one to be able to communicate with people in your church and outside of your church. I hope that works really well for you.
